The world of female shaving isn’t really a world that anyone wants to talk about. Shaving is one of those routines that us ladies just accept as part of our day to day lives, without putting much thought into it. But, TG Marisa Newman did.
When Marisa Newman, an art gallery curator in NYC, went on the hunt for thoughtfully made shaving products, she came up short. There just wasn’t anyone in the market creating high quality or good-looking shaving products. She realized she wasn’t the only one who felt the need to bring some beauty to this otherwise mundane chore. I mean taking the time to shave isn’t something we really look forward to – but why not try to?! So, she decided to design a collection of shaving products herself. After several years of developing each item, MAVE New York launched in 2016.
Full disclosure: I work with MAVE New York and run their social media channels as well as their blog. Because of this, I’ve done a ton of research to educate myself about the do’s and don’t’s of shaving – which you can read more about below. Also, Marisa truly is a GEM of a #girlboss and I am obsessed with the brand that she has created.
The MAVE Shave Collection started with The Razor – a first of it’s kind product specifically designed for women. The slender handle is also extra long handle – making it easier to shave those hard to reach areas. My favorite MAVE product however is the Shave Brush. I thought Shave Brushes were reserved for men and had never really thought about incorporating it into my own shaving routine. The more I have used a Shave Brush and have learned about the benefits, the more I love it – and why almost every gal on my Holiday Shopping List is getting one this year. The Brush is made with super soft, synthetic bristles and I love how sturdy the handle is. Plus, my shaving cream lasts me SO much longer now that I have started using a Shave Brush to apply. The circulation of the Brush helps to create a richer lather with less product.
From there, MAVE developed a full line of all-natural skincare products to both enrich your shaving ritual and make your shave last longer. Their Full-Body Exfoliant is the first step of the prep. Exfoliating your skin pre-shave will help remove the dead skin cells that clog your hair follicles and unclog your pores. This will help lift your hairs for a closer shave, help to prevent ingrown hair, AND opens the way for moisturizing products to penetrate more deeply into the skin. But I truly love MAVE’s Full-Body Exfoliant because it’s so gentle. I can seriously use it all over – yes, even your face – and I don’t feel like I have to skip days because it’s too harsh on my skin.
The next step in the MAVE Shave is the Moisturizing Shave Cream. Most shaving creams I have used in the past are aerosol – which apparently is TERRIBLE for your skin. Aerosols typically contain drying chemicals to help them foam, creating a barrier that doesn’t allow the the hydration your skin needs. The longer your skin is exposed to these chemicals, the harder it becomes for your skin to hydrate itself naturally. MAVE’s Shave Cream has none of that. Instead, it contains natural ingredients like magnolia extract, shea butter and jojoba oil to help protect your skin against dryness. Moral of the story: CREATE your lather instead of having it come straight out of the can.
After you’ve used your Shave Brush, Shave Cream, and Razor to get the job done, make sure to finish off your smooth shave with Body Oil – and MAVE’s Post-Shave Body Oil is easily my favorite skincare product! Body Oil typically penetrates the skin more deeply than lotions so you can count on some serious hydration throughout the layers of your skin. Oils also help to promote elasticity so they can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks AND can help prevent razor burn. Basically, it’s the best thing for your legs. PLUS, MAVE is currently gifting their Body Oil with all purchases over $50 in honor of Black Friday!
If you are looking for the perfect gift for that girl who has everything this year, upgrade her shaving routine with the MAVE Shave System! Let’s change the conversation about shaving and make it something to look forward to!
