saving space at home

City living means small spaces – which isn’t always easy to work with. After going from a small studio to a one bedroom with S, I have learned a few tips and tricks to maximizing a small living space.

1.  Start with the Basics

Start with a good foundation. When trying to save space, I find that getting the right storage solution is the best place to start. I always have good luck at Walmart and Ikea when it comes to inexpensive, space-saving solutions. Look for compact, light items that will brighten up the place without taking up too much space. And, the more storage variety, the better! For example, this compact Ikea vanity includes storage space and a built-in mirror. It was the perfect solution for storing all my beauty needs!

2.  Use Open Shelves

When searching for space-saving solutions, think shelves. I find open shelving to be the most versatile and it forces me to keep things clean (which is v important in tight spaces). You can dress up open shelves with a few home decor items or add baskets or trays when you are looking for some extra extra organization or privacy.

3.  Room Dividers

We really do not have much closet storage.  So when we were looking for a spot for our broom, vacuum, and some exercise equipment – we were pretty stuck. A room divider was the best solution! It’s easy to access, but allows you to keep some items out of sight. Plus, it adds a fun decorative touch to the space!

4.  Utilize Wall Space

For coats, purses, hats, scarves, and all your accessories – use wall hooks! Utilizing wall space will save you a ton of closet space and, again, help you stay organized. If you are anything like me, you tend to throw everything on “the chair.” Having a spot for everything will help you stay clean and organized.

5.  Acrylic Organizers

Acrylic organizers are light and bright so they don’t add much depth – which is a good thing when you are trying to make a space appear larger.  I use acrylic storage solutions for almost everything – makeup, jewelry, art supplies, etc!  I find that Amazon and The Container Store always have the best options when it comes to different acrylic organizers. I’m also a huge fan of GlamBoxes when it comes to jewelry organizer! Again, these help me stay organized and clutter-free.

Sharing a small space can be tough, but these tips and tricks made a huge difference when S and I were moving in together. How do you stay organized in a small space?
